Velingrad is one of the most beautiful and famous balneological and mountain resorts in Bulgaria.  It is situated in the Chepinska Valley in the West Rodopi Mountain and that exact location brings in some unique nature.  In 2008 Velingrad was announced to be the SPA Capital of Bulgaria.
The town was formed  in 1984 by uniting three villages – Chepino, Ladjene and Kamenitza.  Now they are the three major local districts in Velingrad.  The town bears the name of  Vela Peeva who was a participant in the antifascist movement.  During a  sage by the gendarme, in the end of 1944, she sacrificed her life in the area called Bialata Skala (The White Rock) located  high in the mountain.
In addition to the multiple mineral springs Velingrad offers access to the amazing nature of the West Rodopi Mountain.  There are two ski tracks near by the town which makes Velingrad a resort you can enjoy all year around. One of the symbols of Velingrad is the carst spring – Kleptuza.
